About the Institute
China Cultural Institute of Inscription on Stone Drums, Hubei University of Economics, was established on November 26, 2010 under the concern, attention and support of the Party and Administrative Leaders of the University and the guidance of the Scientific Research Department. It is an academic institute and economic entity mainly researched on the culture of the stone drums, the culture of Qin and Chu, calligraphy and painting are homologous culture. Researcher Chen Rongqing is the Director of the Institute.
1. Research Direction
United domestic and foreign academic experts and scholars whose studying aspects on the culture of the stone drums, the culture of Qin and Chu, calligraphy and painting are homologous culture, playing their advantages, applying the scientific methods of traditional and modern academic studying, researching the academic issues of China’s culture of the stone drums, the culture of Qin and Chu, the homologous culture of calligraphy and painting in the related aspects of the communication of Chinese stone drums culture, the evolvement of inscription rubbings on the stone drums, the research of Qin and Chu culture, and the related aspects with the inscription on the stone drums such as philology, literature, linguistics, penmanship study and the research of calligraphy and painting are homologous culture, etc.
2. Research Goals
According to the Party Secretary of the University, Professor Zhou Yuanwu’s requirement: “The future development goals of China Cultural Institute of the Stone Drums will be: building the Institute into a communication centre, research centre and information centre having a certain influence at home and abroad; a open academic and cultural exchange platform integrated academic research with the industry of cultural communication”, taking the principle of seeking truth and innovation, the institute try to work hard in broadening the research areas and innovating research forms of Qin and Chu culture, calligraphy and painting homologous culture, making more cultural achievements in the research of the stone drums culture, Qin and Chu culture, calligraphy and painting homologous culture on the bases with the material object as accordance, with the “Historical Records” and other historical documents as the evidence, with new archaeological findings in Qin and Chu as materials, with the puzzle in the research of stone drums as the starting point. The Institute will open to the world, realizing the exchange and integration of Chinese and Western excellent culture, forming the precipitation of comprehensive human qualities in the Colleges, promoting the construction and development of related subjects in the Colleges and making contributions for the College to becoming a comprehensive University.
3. Research Team
The Institute set up an interdisciplinary research team with the care, attention, support and participation of experts and scholars, such as Mr.Li Xueqin and Mr.Liao Mingchun, Tsinghua University; Mr.Gao Ming, Mr.Zhu Fenghan, Mr.Li Boqian and Mr.Wang Uuechuan, Peking University; Mr. Zhu Yanming, Nankai University; Mr.Ding Meng, the National Palace Museum; Mr. Gong Changwei, China Academy of Social Sciences; Mr. Liu Yutang, Hubei Academy of Social Sciences; Mr. Zhou Shaohua, former Chairman of Hubei Literary Federation, et al. The team mainly based inside the university and jointed by extramural researchers of the old, the middle-aged and the young, their academic background covered Chinese philology, classical literature, Chinese calligraphy study, communication, advertising art, etc.

4. Database Construction
The database construction of the Institute included the construction of paper documents database and electronic documents database. The paper documents database construction relied on the National Library, the Library of CASS, Tianyi Pavilion, Hubei Provincial Library, the Library of Peking University, the Library of Tsinghua University, the Library of Wuhan University, the Library of Huazhong Normal University and the Library of the Hubei University of Economics, etc., playing the role of historical documents collected in those libraries. In addition to the documents purchased by those libraries, we also accepted the documents by social donations. Electronic database stored various types of data and information in the hard disks and CD-ROMs to supplement the inadequate of paper-based information. We established the database of China’ stone drums culture in the web site, providing the original documentation for the domestic and foreign researchers and readers.

5. Website Construction
To popularize the knowledge of China’s stone drums culture and carry forward the excellent traditional culture, the Institute founded an open “Website of China’s Stone Drums Culture” (URL: http://sgwh.hbue.edu.cn ). At present, this website is the first portal website to systematically introduce the Stone Drums Culture at home and abroad. An “Academic Forum” in this website in one of the most active professional forum in the circle of culture，museum, calligraphy and painting. Not only it is an important platform of academic exchange in the circle of culture, museum, calligraphy and painting at home and abroad, but an important window for the majority of fans to understand China’s stone drums culture, the culture of Qin and Chu and the knowledge of archeology and cultural relics.
6. Academic Achievements
A part of research results in the Institute had been published and attached importance by scholars and community, producing a certain influence in the society. With the joint efforts of members in the Institute, a number of research results have been launched around three research directions mentioned above.
For example, “Research of Inscriptions on the Stone Drums” written by researcher Chen Rongqing will published by a publishing house with national level; In the communication research aspect, literature documentary film “The National Treasure of Inscriptions on Stone Drums” written, planed and directed by researcher Chen Rongqing, also as an independent producer, won the first prize of social and educational programs awarded by The State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, and the Fourth “Project Award”; After the film was published to the world in Chinese, English, Japanese and French versions by China International Television Corporation, Hubei University of Economics jointly organized with China Society of Pre-Qin History and China International Television Corporation a “Literature Documentary Film ‘The National Treasure of Inscriptions on Stone Drums’ Publishing and the First Academic Symposium of China Stone Drums Culture ”, invited more than thirty experts and scholars in Peking University, Tsinghua University, China Academy of Social Sciences, National Palace Museum and other research institutes to attend the symposium, discussed the issues such as the status, role and significance of the film publishing in carrying forward the excellent Chinese national and traditional culture and in the integrating of outstanding Chinese and Western culture, the concept of the stone drum culture, calligraphy and painting are homologous culture, the formation and development of the stone drum culture, the way and methods to carry forward the stone drum culture, the focus future work in China Cultural Institute of Inscription on Stone Drums and the issue to promote foreign exchanges, etc. and explored the significance, value and performance skills of using film and television media to carry forward excellent traditional culture.

Researcher Chen Rongqing was invited by the sponsors to participate “Globalization: Visible and Invisible”, China’s First International Symposium on Visual Culture Communication sponsored by the Visual Culture Research Centre of Fudan University and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation of Germany, and made a brief keynote speech titled as “ Social Changes in the Perspective of the Visual Culture of Inscriptions on Stone Drums — On the New Trend of Visual Culture Communication ” to more than 100 experts and scholars came from the United States, Germany, France, Holland and other countries. Researcher Chen Rongqing presented the DVD discs of “The National Treasure of Inscriptions on the Stone Drums” to Dr. Ma Yan, president of the International Association of Visual Culture and Professor of the University of Rhode Island, USA, and Dr. Stefan Friedrich, Konrad Adenauer Foundation of Germany. Researcher Chen Rongqing successively attended “The International Symposium of New Trends in Film Aesthetics and Theory in the Context of Globalization” jointly sponsored by Shanghai University, the China Society of Film Comment, the Office of Shanghai International Film Festival; “The Hangzhou International Symposium of Overseas Sinology and Chinese and Western Culture Exchange” jointly sponsored by the College of Foreign Language Culture and International Exchange at Zhejiang University, the Institute of Cross-Culture and Regional Research at the University of Copenhagen, the School of History, Classics and Archeology at the University of Edinburgh; and the Academic Symposiums respectively sponsored by Shaanxi Normal University, the Yellow River Branch of China Geographical Society, etc. Mr. Gu Youquan, famous calligrapher and teacher in Hubei University of Economics, has engaged in systematic and comprehensive collection and textual research to the inscriptions on the stone drums.
Hubei Provincial Department of Education has placed the research of inscriptions on the stone drums as a key project into the humanities and social science program. The creative work of high density film and television series “The Legend of Inscriptions on the Stone Drums” has already started.
Researches around the culture of stone drums involved a number of subject fields, provided greater space of development for the Institute and for the subject construction and development of the University. We will carry out comprehensive researches in more areas to support the cultural development of the University and make new achievements in the aspect of exploring the combination of cultural industry and subject construction.
